Frequently Asked Questions

What is “WorkCover support”?

It’s GP care to assess and manage a workplace injury, complete the Certificate of Capacity, coordinate referrals (e.g., physio, imaging), and help with return-to-work paperwork and reviews.

Get first aid if needed, tell your employer, and book a GP appointment to document the injury and complete a Certificate of Capacity. Your employer or you (or the GP) can then notify the insurer/claims service provider to start the claim.

Report the injury to your employer and notify the claims service provider (online/phone/email/post). icare explains the steps and contacts.

It’s the medical certificate your nominated treating doctor (usually your GP) completes to describe your injury and work capacity. Insurers use it to manage entitlements and return-to-work plans.

In most cases, certificates shouldn’t exceed 28 days (longer only with clinical reasons). Keep it current to avoid delays to entitlements.

No. See your GP promptly; the claim can be lodged after. Insurers may make provisional payments while assessing liability (up to 12 weeks of weekly payments and up to $10,000 in medical expenses).

Photo ID, employer and incident details, any forms/letters from the insurer, a medication list, and any previous certificates or test results. (Your doctor can submit certificates electronically.)

For accepted claims, insurers pay up to SIRA-set maximum fees for medical and allied health services. Ask reception about any practice fees if your claim is new or pending.

Yes—your GP coordinates care and referrals. Some services (especially ongoing allied health) may require insurer pre-approval and must follow SIRA schedules and approvals.

Yes. You can choose your Nominated Treating Doctor (NTD), typically your GP, who manages certification and recovery/return-to-work.

They’re adjusted tasks/hours that match your current capacity to help you recover at or back to work. Employers should identify suitable work options and have a return-to-work program.

Keep certificates up-to-date—insurers can delay or suspend weekly payments if certification isn’t current. Book reviews before the due date.

History/review discussions may be suitable by telehealth, but physical examination or forms may require an in-person visit, depending on your injury and insurer requirements.

Allow 30–60 minutes for initial assessments and certificates; longer if extra tests or referrals are needed. (Timeframes vary with injury complexity.)
