What Is Travel Medicine?

Protecting Your Health Before You Go

Travel medicine is all about preventing sickness and staying well while you’re away from home. Different countries have different health risks, so it’s important to talk to a travel medicine doctor before you leave.

Some countries may require or recommend vaccines for illnesses like yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis, or malaria, which we acknowledge. We’ll guide you on what’s needed based on where you’re going, how long you’ll be there, and your personal health history.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a travel medicine appointment?

A pre-travel consult where your GP reviews your itinerary and health, checks routine vaccines, recommends destination-specific vaccines, discusses malaria/bug bite prevention, travellers’ diarrhoea prevention, and any documents you may need.

Ideally 6–8 weeks before departure so there’s time for multi-dose vaccines and any malaria prevention; Australian guidance also says to plan 6–12 weeks ahead if possible.

Your itinerary (dates/regions/stopovers), AIR/vaccination record, medication list, previous reactions, and any employer/volunteer program requirements.

Your GP ensures routine vaccines are up-to-date, then considers extras based on destination, activities and risk (e.g., hepatitis A/B, typhoid, JE, rabies, yellow fever—if indicated). Decisions follow the Australian Immunisation Handbook.

If your itinerary requires yellow fever vaccination, it must be given at an approved yellow fever vaccination clinic, and the International Certificate of Vaccination becomes valid 10 days after the shot and remains valid for life. We’ll advise where to book if needed.

Often yes. Most adult vaccines can be co-administered (different sites, spaced appropriately) per NCIRS/ATAGI guidance—your GP will plan timing.

Depends on country/region, season, and activities. Your GP will advise on bite avoidance and whether medicines are recommended for your specific route.

Your GP will individualise advice. Some vaccines are preferred/contraindicated in pregnancy or certain conditions; the ATAGI Handbook is used to guide decisions.

Keep medicines in original packaging, carry a doctor’s letter/prescription, avoid carrying more than a 3-month supply, and check legality at your destination (some drugs are restricted).

Some destinations ask for vaccine proof (e.g., yellow fever) and you may need an international COVID-19 vaccination certificate depending on entry rules. Check Smartraveller and your destination’s embassy.

History and planning can often be started by phone/video, but vaccinations must be in-person.

Seek care overseas if you’re unwell, and book a review after you return if you had fever/diarrhoea or other symptoms—tell your GP where you travelled. (This helps target tests and treatment.)

Most travel vaccines and malaria tablets are private (not NIP-funded); consult and vaccine fees vary by clinic—ask reception when booking.
