What Is a Pre-Employment Medical Check?

Understanding the Process with the Right Guidance

A pre-employment medical check is a health assessment your future employer may ask for. It helps make sure you’re physically and mentally fit for the job, and it can also help you understand any health issues that might need support at work.

At our clinic, we take the time to make you feel at ease as we tackle your pre-employment requirements. Our experienced GPs will check your general health and may look at specific areas depending on the job; for example, hearing, vision, mobility, and heart health.

We take a kind, respectful approach to all pre-employment checks, because we know this step can be a little nerve-wracking for some.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pre-employment medical check?

It’s a role-specific health assessment requested by an employer to confirm you can safely perform the job. Typical components include a medical history review, physical exam, and checks such as blood pressure, vision, hearing, urine test, and musculoskeletal assessment.

Depending on the role, your check may include: general physical exam, blood pressure/heart rate, vision and hearing tests, urine test, and joint/mobility checks. Extra tests (e.g., spirometry, ECG, vaccinations, audiometry, drug & alcohol screening) may be added if the job requires them.

Most assessments take 30–60 minutes, longer if extra tests are required.

Usually no fasting. Bring photo ID, your glasses/contact lens prescription, a current medication list, any forms from your employer, and relevant medical reports or vaccination records.

Only if your employer requests it. If included, it’s commonly a urine or saliva screen following chain-of-custody procedures.

Your health information is confidential. With your consent, the clinic shares only what’s necessary for the job (usually a fitness/requirements report) with the employer, in line with the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles. You can also request access to your own health information.

Yes—ask the clinic. Individuals have a right to access their health information (with limited exceptions) under the Privacy Act.

Clinics don’t “pass/fail” people; they report whether you meet the inherent requirements of the role or note restrictions/recommendations. Employment decisions must be job-related and non-discriminatory.

Be honest about your history and medications so the clinician can assess you safely. Anti-discrimination laws mean medical information shouldn’t be used to unfairly exclude you if you can perform the role (with reasonable adjustments where appropriate).

Not routinely. Pregnancy-related information is sensitive and private and should only be requested where it’s clearly relevant to the job and with consent; discrimination on the basis of pregnancy is unlawful.

No. Those are separate background checks. A pre-employment medical assesses health/fitness; Police Checks/WWCC screen criminal and child-related history.

Possibly. Some roles require assessment against Austroads’ Assessing Fitness to Drive standards. Your employer will advise if this applies.

Many employers cover the cost; some ask candidates to pay and reimburse later. Check your offer or recruiter instructions.

Simple checks are often same day or next business day. Timeframes depend on extra tests (e.g., lab results, imaging).

Bring a current list and take medicines as prescribed unless told otherwise. Some medicines can affect specific tests (e.g., drug screens), so transparency helps the clinician interpret results correctly.

History-taking may be suitable by telehealth, but physical tests (e.g., vision, hearing, vitals) require an in-person visit.

The GP will explain the finding and may recommend follow-up with your usual doctor or further tests. With your consent, the employer receives a role-relevant summary.
