Frequently Asked Questions

What does a men’s health GP appointment include?

General health review (blood pressure, weight/waist), mental health, sexual health, screening (e.g., bowel, prostate discussion), and vaccinations—tailored to your age and risks.

From 45+ (or 30+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people), a heart health check with absolute CVD risk assessment; plus regular blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes checks as advised by your GP.

There’s no national population screening. Men 50–69 (or earlier if higher risk/family history) can consider two-yearly PSA testing after a discussion of benefits and harms; DRE isn’t recommended as a routine screening test in primary care.

You can request a free kit from 45–49; from 50–74 you’ll be mailed a free kit every 2 years. Do the kit even if you feel well.

No routine screening is recommended. Know what’s normal for you and see a GP promptly for any lump, swelling or pain (sudden severe pain is urgent).

If you’re <30 and sexually active, annual chlamydia (and other STI) testing is recommended; others test based on risk or symptoms—ask your GP what’s right for you.

Annual influenza, COVID-19 per ATAGI 2025 (e.g., 6-monthly for ≥75s; 12-monthly for many adults), and shingles (Shingrix) funded for ≥65, ≥50 for First Nations, and certain immunocompromised adults. Your GP will advise.

Yes. We assess physical and psychological causes and often check heart health, as ED can be a marker of cardiovascular disease. (We don’t promote specific prescription medicines online—this is restricted by the TGA.)

Yes—your GP can prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan and refer you under Better Access (Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual + 10 group sessions/year).

Discuss symptoms with your GP. We can screen, arrange sleep studies if indicated, and manage contributing risks (e.g., weight, alcohol, nasal issues).

Yes—history, results and care-plan reviews often suit phone/video. Physical exams, procedures and vaccinations require an in-person visit.

Photo ID, Medicare card, medication list, recent test results, and any screening/vaccine reminders or letters (e.g., bowel kit reminders).

Allow 20–40 minutes depending on what’s covered. Medicare rebates apply to eligible services; clinics set their own fees—ask reception about any gap.

Your GP will individualise care. For PSA, many guidelines advise the harms may outweigh benefits from ≥70; bowel screening continues to 74 via the program (after that, discuss options).
