What Is a Driver Medical Assessment?

Making Sure You’re Fit to Drive Safely

A driver medical assessment in NSW is a health check required by the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) for some drivers. These may include older drivers, people with certain medical conditions, or those applying for commercial licences like bus or truck drivers.

In our assessment, our experienced GPs will check your eyesight, general physical health, mental wellbeing, and any specific medical conditions that could affect your ability to drive safely. If you’re nervous, don’t worry—we’ll guide you through everything in plain, simple language and make sure you feel comfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a driver medical assessment?

It’s a health check by your GP to assess if you meet Australia’s medical standards for safe driving (Austroads’ Assessing Fitness to Drive). Licensing decisions are made by the Driver Licensing Authority using your doctor’s report.

You may need an assessment if you’re 75+ (annual for class C/R in NSW), 85+ (plus a practical test every 2 years to keep an unrestricted licence), if you have a relevant medical condition/injury, or if you hold/seek a commercial or heavy vehicle licence.

A history and medication review, vision check, blood pressure/heart rate and other exams relevant to your condition or licence class. Additional tests (e.g., audiometry, spirometry, ECG) may be requested for certain roles or conditions.

Photo ID, TfNSW letter (if you received one), your glasses/contacts, medication list, and any recent specialist letters or test results. Doctors can submit the result online to TfNSW, or you can use a paper form if needed.

History discussion may be suitable by telehealth, but physical checks (vision, vitals, hearing) require an in-person visit.

Yes. Commercial and passenger vehicle drivers must meet higher medical standards (e.g., for vision, hearing, sleep disorders, cardiovascular disease, diabetes). Reviews can be more frequent.

Yes. You can opt for a modified (conditional) licence that limits driving to a local area; this may remove the need for an older-driver test (you still need the annual medical).

Austroads lists conditions such as cardiovascular disease, blackouts/seizures, diabetes, sleep disorders (e.g., sleep apnoea), neurological or musculoskeletal issues, vision and hearing disorders.

That’s fine. You’ll be assessed against visual acuity and field standards. If you need corrective lenses, the licence may include a condition to drive with glasses/contacts.

Most assessments take 30–60 minutes. If you received a TfNSW letter, book before the due date—late assessments can lead to licence suspension. Doctors can submit results electronically to TfNSW.

Yes, if your licence is still valid and you meet your due dates. TfNSW may suspend a licence if medical reviews are late or not provided.

Your doctor provides a medical report using Austroads standards; TfNSW makes the licensing decision and may apply conditions or request a practical assessment.

Fees vary by clinic. For age/health-related assessments, Medicare may help cover the cost—ask reception when booking.

Your GP will explain the finding and may recommend further tests or referral. TfNSW receives a role-relevant report to decide on your licence (unrestricted, conditional, further testing, or not fit).
