Frequently Asked Questions

What does a women’s health GP appointment include?

We cover general health, periods and menopause, contraception, fertility/pregnancy planning, mental health, screening (cervical/breast/bowel) and vaccinations, plus referrals when needed.

If you’re 25–74 and have ever had sexual contact, have a Cervical Screening Test every 5 years. It looks for HPV (the virus that can cause cervical cancer).

Yes. Self-collection is available to all eligible screeners 25–74 (via your GP). It’s accurate and acceptable, and the sample is tested for HPV.

Australia moved from 2-yearly Pap smears to 5-yearly HPV testing. HPV tests detect risk earlier and reduce how often you need screening.

BreastScreen Australia invites people 50–74 for a free mammogram every 2 years. People 40+ may also book a free mammogram. See your GP promptly if you have symptoms.

Yes. From age 45, you can request a free kit; from 50–74 you’ll be sent a kit every 2 years. Do the kit even if you feel well.

All options, including LARC (IUDs and implants), the pill, ring, injection and condoms. LARC methods are among the most effective (>99%) and low-maintenance. Your GP will help you choose what suits you.

Australian law prohibits advertising prescription-only medicines to the public. We discuss any prescription options privately in consult.

Offer annual chlamydia (and other STI) testing to sexually active young people, with testing thereafter based on risk. Your GP will advise what’s right for you.

Pre-conception checks, medicine review, folate advice, and early antenatal care including recommended pregnancy vaccines (flu any trimester; whooping cough at 20–32 weeks; RSV at 28–36 weeks under the NIP).

Yes—assessment, lifestyle support and discussion of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) when appropriate. For many symptomatic women, benefits outweigh risks; care is individualised.

Yes—cervical screening (including self-collection) can be done in pregnancy when due; we follow the national guidelines pathway.

History reviews, contraception counselling and results discussions often suit telehealth; procedures, vaccinations and physical exams require an in-person visit.

Medicare rebates apply to eligible services; clinics set their own fees. Please ask reception about any gap before your visit.
